Measurement WG DevWeek: Day 3

Gilou made a presentation about the EmonCMS for OpenEnergyMonitor and its visualisation system:

The visualisation software that Gilou is demonstrating is reading from the anemometer and wind vane mounted on the tower Piggott turbine that powers the workshop:

 

 

 

He worked with Ivan on the wifi interface with 2 cheap modules that can be adapted to an arduino board. None of them worked well so we’ll search for other (cheap) solutions.

Jay worked on a water heating controller to use the excess energy produced by wind turbines. The system divert surplus power to a hot water heater. This will avoid energy to be “wasted” on the grid. Together with Jon, he also worked on classifying anemometers according to cost, reliability and accuracy.

Ivan and Clement and Matt worked together on a radio module (Xbee) which is composed of a receptor and an emettor. They did range test which gave rather poor results : the maximum range was of about 30 m and the signal was often corrupted at this distance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Matt then had a look at the RN-XV  and the ESP-8266 wifi modules to make them work. With Gilou they searched for some other wifi modules that may be more suitable to the datalogger requirements.

Yasin, aurélie and Jonathan worked on a new triac variator made with spare components. The new variator was much more precise. They also worked on a solution to attach the rotor of the washing machine motor to a piece of wood on which the anemometer will be.

Matt gave a crash course on the Arduino platform:

Jon worked on the specification of the different possible uses of the datalogger. He found 4 different groups. Each one of them has different specifications that will be taken into account for the design of the datalogger.

We also had a group session with the expertise of Matt in order to define the data transmission part of the datalogger. It was a long session and the work is not yet finished. We still have to discuss the radio/Wifi/GPRS communication system.

Pour résumer nous avons fait un tableau qui regroupe les différentes possibilités de communication entre nos cartes électroniques et réseaux (internet, serveur ou GSM). Notre tableau regroupe beaucoup de possibilités même si certaines présentent à première vue de nombreux désavantages (donc inutilisables). De plus nous avons évoqué les moyens de stockage de données et l’alimentation des cartes électroniques.

Pour l’alimentation nous avons fait deux catégories : une pour l’alimentation d’une carte électronique à l’intérieur ainsi qu’une autre pour l’extérieur (système de mesures du vent). Pour l’alimentation à l’intérieur nous pouvons utiliser un petit transformateur et un pont de diodes avec un petit régulateur pour avoir une alimentation en DC fixe. Pour l’alimentation extérieure différentes possibilités ont été évoquées mais aucune décision n’est encore définie, même si pour l’instant le dataduino de Matt fonctionne avec des 3 piles en séries de 1.5V.

Pour le stockage nous utiliserons surement une carte SD (512mo peut stocker plus de 3 ans de données) pour sauvegarder les informations, si la communication avec le réseau est défaillante. La question du réseau est plus difficile car elle dépend de beaucoup de facteurs. Par exemple, si la personne a une possibilité de connexion wifi il est facile de connecter un petit module peu cher sur une carte Arduino pour envoyer nos données sur un serveur.
Si la personne n’a pas de connexion internet il est préférable de mettre un module GSM pour envoyer les données (mais plus couteux et limité). La solution par câble a été évoquée et peut être une solution pour l’implantation de nouvelles éoliennes.

Nous avons ciblé quelques composants et modules que nous utiliserons surement pour la construction de notre DataLogger.
