Wind Empowerment member Jon Leary has recently published the paper Rural electrification with household wind systems in remote high wind regions, based on a comparative analysis of two small wind programmes; in Argentine Patagonia and in the Falkland Islands/Las Islas Malvinas. Interviews with members of the communities highlight a number of critical factors, resulting in different outcomes in the two case studies.

Lots of lessons to learn here, definitely worth reading for anyone thinking of implementing small wind turbines in remote, off-grid locations!

The paper was a result of a research collaboration between Jon Leary of Wind Empowerment (and at the time of the University of Sheffield), Phillip Shaube, who was funded by the WISIONS of Sustainability initiative and Luciana Clementi, funded through The National University of the Central Buenos Aires Province and the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina.
