Nepal Market Assessment Project with KAPEG

Wind Empowerment MAWG coordinator, Alfie Alsop, is currently working in Kathmandu alongside the WE member KAPEG to carry out a strategic small wind market assessment for Nepal, which is being financially supported by our friends at WISIONS.

Wind has historically struggled to find a place in rural electrification in Nepal, being often overshadowed by hugely successful Micro-Hydro Power and recently widespread use of Solar PV… but the country does exhibit significant wind resources, especially in the immense mountains that dominate the north of the country.

It’s massively important to implement the most appropriate technology in each context and it’s believed that in certain locations in Nepal, small wind fits the bill. All we need to do need to find how well it fits the bill, and where!

The project underway aims to quantify the potential market in Nepal, whilst identifying the existing barriers and bottlenecks to growth within the country. Once these barriers are identified it’s hoped that recommendations and guidelines can be formulated and implemented to improve the enabling environment for small wind stakeholders.

The project is being conducted in three phases:

  • Stakeholder interview campaign
    • Identifying difficulties in planning, implementation and maintenance
  • Geospatial and techno-economic modelling
    • To quantify the market potential and identify suitable locations
  • Stakeholder engagement workshop
    • To draw on previous results to make final recommendations

If you happen to be in Kathmandu on April 18th (2018) and you feel you can add to the discussion then please register for attendence here!

In the meantime, watch this space for more updates on this project.
