The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK, is recruiting for a Research Assistant to join their Energy for Development Team on a couple of exciting projects based around increasing energy access in Malawi. The main activities will be:
• Working with Community Energy Malawi (CEM) to deliver energy access projects in Malawi. This will involve: working with local stakeholders to complete a community energy toolkit, assess the potential for the deployment of district energy officers in Malawi, design specific research activities including a nationwide sustainability study of off grid PV systems and in-depth feasibility studies for productive uses of energy in off-grid contexts.
• Engaging with the Sustainable Off-grid Electrification of Rural Villages (SOGERV) project activities. This will include the design and implementation of specific research activities and all associated data collection and analysis with local partners. Research here is multi-disciplinary, working across all the sustainability pillars, and includes technical system analysis of solar PV systems, business modeling and analysis, community engagement and project implementation.

Wind Empowerment have worked with the University and Strathclyde and Community Energy Malawi recently on a Market Assessment for Small Wind and Solar PV for the applications of Productive Use of Energy and Minigrids. Both organisations are engaged in cutting edge research aimed at increasing access to energy in Malawi, which has one of the lowest electrification rates in the world.
