Concept prototype design of modified Piggott turbine to use bamboo blades and operate downwind
In south India we enjoy areas with good wind resources, but at times we face issues where we require tall towers to overcome trees and vegetation. We decided to develop a downwind turbine that would have flexible blades and in this way lower thrust forces in high winds. This allows for lighter frame, lighter and\or taller tower. The options for blade material can vary from fiberglass, plastic or bamboo (flexible wood). We have chosen to test laminated bamboo as an option in this design since it is a readily available in India. Our aim is to launch a discussion and subsequent global effort to bring this design to be built and tested.
